Solent has been a university since July 2005, but it has a long and complex educational history. Incorporated as an independent higher education institution in 1989, the University’s origins can be traced back to a private School of Art founded in 1856. Mergers between Southampton College of Art, the College of Technology and the College of Nautical Studies at Warsash laid the foundations for what is now Southampton Solent University.
Since becoming a university, Southampton Solent has helped nearly fifty thousand students from all walks of life to make the most of their potential. Guided by three Vice-Chancellors in turn, the University has changed dramatically over the past ten years – from campus improvements to the latest state-of-the-art facilities.
ACCOMMODATION & LOCATION
Southampton is a city with something for everyone. Beautiful city center parks, an electric night-time economy and a thriving arts and music scene all meet to offer residents something truly unique.
Moving away from West Quay (one of the UK’s largest shopping centres) and towards the waterfront, you’ll find a hub of independent eateries, venues and stores. At the other end of the city is Bedford Place, the centre of the city’s night-life and home to a huge range of pubs and clubs.
There’s plenty going on there on campus too. The Students’ Union is complemented by fitness facilities, a student-run cinema and a range of other leisure venues. Spend downtime between lectures relaxing in our cafés or step out of the front reception directly in one the city’s five parks.
Student accommodation is more than just a roof over your head – the place you live can have a real impact on how well you settle into university life. With six halls of residence and established links with the private rental sector, dedicated accommodation service are here to make sure that every Solent student is happy and safe within their home.
Solent’s six student residences cater to a range of requirements and are great places to work, relax and meet new friends. The majority of University-owned accommodation is reserved for first-year students, but there are also provisions for returning students, postgraduates, officer cadets and summer students.
Those who would be more comfortable renting in the private sector are encouraged to use the Southampton Accreditation Scheme for Student Housing (SASSH). This scheme, a collaboration between the two local universities, helps ensure that any property you rent is safe and secure.
